Zombie Night at Kryptonite Bar is not to be missed.  It’s held the last Monday of every month.  In warmer months (when the liquid latex won’t freeze off his face), Todd will be seen tending bar in full zombie makeup.  Since Halloween-time, Todd and I have been making candy for people to munch on while watching the cheesy zombie/horror movies that are shown.  We started with simple white chocolate candies to make the pretzel sticks, candies, and lollipops and have now graduated to trying out flavors and colors.  For yesterday’s Zombie Night we even made cookies using pre-made sugar cookie dough, a heart shaped cookie cutter (one of the movies was My Bloody Valentine), and black frosting with red gel accent.  I will admit that I was really hoping that the black frosting would stain peoples’ teeth black…you know, to look more like a zombie, but Todd reports that didn’t happen…darn it!

We usually spend a couple of hours getting everything made.  Our kitchen is tiny.  I mean really tiny.  We have two feet total of counter space and an island with three more feet of counter space to use (and of course there’s stuff that stays on those spaces, so we don’t really have all that much room).  We also have an “apartment sized” refrigerator/freezer and an “apartment sized” oven/stove (and the oven door doesn’t open all the way because the radiator is in front of it).  So, when we make these treats, it’s a process.

After melting the chocolate discs in the microwave, we add color (if we’re using white chocolate) and flavoring.  Our favorites (okay, I’m the sweet tooth, so MY favorites) are cherry, orange, and lemon.  Todd will usually make some cinnamon, too, because it goes over well.  We pour the chocolate into molds, attach lollipop sticks or pretzel rods as needed, then put them in the freezer (before that happens, though, we have to move all the stuf in the freezer to the top shelf or doors – apartment sized, remember?).  Then we get started on the next batch.  By the time we’re done melting and pouring one batch, the one in the freezer is ready to come out.  They don’t usually come out looking too pretty, but we think that’s a part of their charm.

So, yeah, it’s a bit of work, but it’s a labor of love.  We like making these treats because we also know that the people who consume them are very thankful that we have done so.  Each week we make more and more, and they get eaten up pretty quickly.
