Back in February Mollie at Wild Olive announced that she’d be hosting a stitch swap that would run the month of March. I submitted my name, interests, and favourite colours. Someone, some place in the world has my name and will be sending me a little bit of handmade goodness by March 31st.

My stitchee indicated what she likes, and I then set out to create that for her. My first attempt was pretty bad, but I’m happy with what I finally created. I found a picture of a cephalopod that looked like it would be fun to stitch. I threw in the pencil-thin moustache last, and I think it makes it perfect.

I’ve decided that his name is Cuthbert Smythe-Jones, III,
and he’s quiet the ladies, uh, octopus.

Per the instructions, he’s stitched within a 4″ hoop. I added a couple of extras that I made that I hope my stitchee will like.

All items will go out into the mail on Monday.

Naperville is lucky to have many independent bead stores, besides the usual corporate craft stores. In them, you can find lots of really cool beads. The only one I’ll mention and endorse is Kasie’s Beads in downtown Naperville. The shop is super cool, there’s a great selection, the staff member I’ve meet is really nice and knowldegeable, and the prices are a lot better than any of the other bead stores. Here are the earrings I made over the weekend.

I have been a busy little bee planning our wedding. Much of the decorations and things we’ll be wearing will be DIY. One DIY item are the earrings I’ll wear, and the earrings my bridesmaids will wear.

My earrings have a little something special in them; I added pearls from a pair of earrings I inherited from my Great Grandma Rosie. I got all of her costume jewelry when she died, and there was a lot of clip on earrings with pieces I liked, but didn’t wear because clip on earrings hurt!

Presents for My Mom

For the first nine years of my life my dad was in the Navy on nuclear submarines, and the Navy was a very important part of our lives. We saw some neat places and met some neat people…some we’re even still in touch with. About the time I was going to get started on my mom’s Xmas sweatshirt I also bought the Classic Tattoo Designs book. In it, on page 7, was the cutest “sailor girl” design that I knew my mom would love. I printed it out at 70% using the CD-ROM that came with the book, then traced it through the back with a transfer pen, and ironed it on to a sweatshirt that I got at Kohl’s.

Another present I made for my mom was a matching Irish-themed charm bracelet and pair of earrings. (I also made the bracelet for my sister-in-law.) I got all the supplies from one of our favorite stores, Michaels. They have got the coolest jewelry making section.

The Librarian Is In

In May of 2010 I will graduate from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Studies (MLIS). This means that I will be a real, live, OFFICIAL librarian. Many people mistakenly think that anyone who works at a library, or anyone who sits at a reference desk is a librarian – not true. In order to become a librarian with the title, you need a bachelor’s degree in either library science or a related field and then a master’s degree in library science, library studies, or library and information studies.

Below are some pictures of a lovely lady I stitched for myself on a plain white shirt I got from Wal-Mart. The pattern is from the Sexy Librarian group of patterns from Sublime Stitching. I like this shirt a lot, for obvious reasons, and I get many compliments from strangers when I wear it. I also included a picture of the earrings I made for myself. They are super simple to make, but look like they’re hard to make.
